Hey people i have major internet problems. recently i was looking up
some antivirus programs, for free trials, i found a website on google
which had a download that would close bad ports. i read up on ports and
thought this would be a gr8 idea. however wen i ran the program which
did not install on my system but simply ran, it closed something like
"180 bad ports"
i thought this would be a good idea but now when i connected to
the internet i tried as per usual to go to my homepage but simply got
an error " Page cannot be displayed" ive tried everything, deleting
cookeis, internet files, restoring defaults, checking connections, cant
do a syystem restore, and so ive concluded its the ports thats causing
the problem as i can connect but not access any p2p software or
messenger programs.

So i need some help, on how to view ports that any programs i have may
use and how to open them. If any1 out there can help id be so so happy,
cuse i use the internet so much in my daily life!! thanks in advance if
you can help!!!!!!

Hi
It is hard to know what you did and you did not include any information about your
system and Internet connection.

In general there is No need to close ports.

You install a Software Firewall and depending on your setting it would keep all the
ports close (that is one of the main functions of software Firewall) and would alert you
when some thing is blocked and it need to be opened.

I would suggest that you start from scratch and install a Good defense suit to help you
handle security.

At a guess, you had information entered into your Hosts file. Set it back to
scratch. You can manually do that or run System Restore.

Buffy,

Do you get this for some pages, or all pages?

What was this program that you found on Google?

DNS resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock subsystem.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Also, check your MTU settings.
