Can anyone help and tell me why my computer will not activate the monitor.
Have checked monitor by changing monitor and cable.
Can hear windows activating but black screen and monitor shows standby amber
light.
when last used installed Cyberlink DVD solution with Nero.
Any ideas Folks

Monitors vary widely, of course, but an amber light often means that the
monitor is turned on but not receiving a video signal from the computer.
That's usually a mechanical problem, typically the video cable is loose or
broken (bent or broken pins).

If the same monitor and video cable work fine on a different computer, the
problem is in your computer, Possibly the video card is kaput.

try F8 safe mode, "Enable VGA Mode".

could be display setting is out of video display range.
reset display setting.

Follow the F8 suggestion to get to VGA mode then under display in the
control panel select settings -then advanced then Monitor Now make sure your
Monitor Setting is 60Hz-if not change it to 60Hz. This will be the correct
setting for a TFT monitor-if you have a very good one then 75Hz may also
work

Hi Guys and Girls
Thanks for all your suggestions Have tried a monitor and cable that works on
my other computer. Tried pressing key F8 still it does not fire up. next is a
replacement vidio card.
Is it possible to use any vidio card to check or do they have to be
compatible.
Any other ideas

Hi sorry nothing has worked thus far. As I understand it you have tried
another monitor and cable and you still get a blank screen? Therefore the
problem must be the PC. Ok Have you tried removing the graphics card then
re-seating it? Sometimes they make a bad connection with the AGP or PCI
slot. If that doesn't work take the graphics card out of your other PC and
put it in the machine giving problems. We are only looking for signs of
activity here-just the Bios tests before Windows starts. If you see anything
on the screen there is no reason why it shouldn't go into Windows-you will
be asked to install a graphics card driver but just cancel all those message
boxes as this is just a test. You could at this point remove via the control
panel the DVD software you put on last. Now shut the PC down and put back
the original graphics card-if you still have a dead screen then sadly your
graphics card is the problem. Hope this helps

Hi Chelsea
Tried everyhing you suggested plus changed power box incase it might be a
power problem. I am new to repairing my own computers. I am English and live
in Gran Canaria Spain The repair shops I have used here are a rip off, from
one charging for a new hard drive when checking found it was my original.
Another upgrading my old windows 98 with a pirate copy of windows XP.So it
pays to learn a little.
Chelsea thanks for your help any other ideas please let me know.

Dixonian69,
I have the 'out of range' problem. My video card has way more choices of
resolution than my monitor (Samsung 150MP flat screen). How can I limit the
resolutions on the video card (Gainward FX5900XT)? It has VESA resolutions
as low as 320x200, VGA up to 1600x1200. The monitor range is 680x400 to
1024x768. I didn't know about the F8 fix so I have changed to a CRT monitor
& changed the resolution, then put the flat screen bsck on.
