Computer Network Question

Im one of those sorry saps that has 4 computers at home wired to a
linksys router. Im am, by default, the network guy at home getting
questions from the family about everything.
Recently, I've noticed the connectivity between computers is spotty. I
believe the root of the problem is as follows and I'd like to find a
way to clean this up a little...
I login in as administrator under the windows safemode. Going to the
shared folders I change the access privelages.
This has recently resulted in one computer showing me what is in the
laptop's shared folder. Great right.. but the laptop does not show me
what is in the desktop's folder. In fact, when I go my network places
in explorer, windows network, and click on the network, I get a note
saying that it is possible I do not have access privelages. I have, as
administrator, gone onto both computers to open up access to each
other's shared folders as wide as possible. Only one is beneffiting.
I have noticed in the access tab of the shared folders dialogue box,
several different objects whose access I tinker with. I am temped to
delete all those objects and start clean, perhaps letting the windows
network wizard restablish connections.

Is there, in fact, a way to un-install and re-install network
configurations? e.g. start again?
Any positive suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you right click the particular folder and select properties and then the
security tab and then advanced, there is an option to replace all child
objects.

I would suggest making 1 PC the server and getting everyone to store their
docs in the one location. This makes things a bit easier imo.

I'll try this,, thankyou. In fact, we don't share files that
often..but there are a couple of files we all use,, e.g. family
photos. They are on one server,, perhaps, as you suggested, I"ll
focus on that folder to ensure everyone has access to it.
Thanks again.

Check that all pcs
are in the same workgroup
dns settings are the same
gateway is the same
subnet mask is correct
File and printer services is installed on each pc
One pc is designated as the master browser. (the most senior op system)
There are specific registry entries to confirm this.
The one pc that gives you the most trouble - Blow away all settings and
reset again.
there should no need to observe what is happening in safe mode.
What error messsages do you get when you create a mapped network drive
