Computer management and services gone haywire - way to reset it?

I had an episode last month of a computer ttroke ;^) All of a sudden
slowed to a crawl, was acting bizarre. Rebooted and soon after noticed
that when I inserted removable devices (nikon digital camera, thumb
drives, etc) they did not show up in My Computer view. Also had a
bunch of service failures. Went in to Computer management and ALL the
services were diabled!!! Truly wierd. Pretty good about running
maintenance. Have Trend Micro PC Cillin AV running, Windows Defender
anti spyware, and Spybot Search and Destroy which run regularly.

Thought for sure based on symptoms I would find a virus or malware.
But found nothing!

In order to get get a removeable to be seen I have to assign it a drive
leter in Computer Management and explore it from within there - still
wont show in My Computer/Explorer.

As for services, I guessed which ones I needed but, naturally, kept
getting tons of app failures so I set them all to Autmoatic and enabled
them.

Probably destined for a refomat but would first like to know if I can
reset this area or a way to look into it further. Thoughts and
insights welcome!

Having the same problem. Mine notiftied me that I had to reregister windows
XP. Adfterwards almost all of my services had been disabled and could not be
restarted. They all stated that an unidentified service could not be
started. I've contacted Microsoft and patiently waiting for response.
