Computer Locks Up

A windows xp hom computer with 1ghz amd, 512 Ram has begun to lock up. I am
unsure if the lock ups began prior to installing the other 256 stick of ram
or after. Is there any reason why this would happen other than a bad memory
stick? Is there a way to test if it is indeed the memory?
 
the computer boots fine with the extra stick of memory and without it.
That's never been the problem. We added the extra stick to speed the
computers proccesses up. And it locks up periodically now.
 
Yes there is a way to test if it is the memory, take the stick of memory out
and see if it boots.

Download Memtest86. It will make a bootable floppy or bootable CD-ROM.

Take out all but the new 256 Meg stick of RAM.

Boot from the Memtest disk and run the test programs. If you get
an error result of any kind, you probably have a bad stick of RAM.

However, your new RAM may just be slightly incompatable with your
old RAM. Test it with Memtest before trying to replace it.
