computer keeps rebooting - frustrated!

K

kit4kat

My computer keeps randomly crashing.

I'm running a gateway 1.9 gigahertz p4 with xp home sp2.

I haven't added any new hardware recently. I have tried disabling
reboot automatically so that I might get a bluescreen with an error
message, but the computer just freezes. There is no blue screen.

The computer crashes when I try to run spybot. It is showing some
spyware, but crashes during repair. I have run adaware successfully.
The computer also crashes before norton can do a system scan, although
i run it weekly, so a virus is probably not the problem. crashes also
occur in safe mode.

I tried the suggestion given to another poster about running the
driver verifier. It isn't helping because I get no blue screen. Of
course now I'm stumped as to how to stop the verifier from running.
<sigh>

I have benn tring to solve this problem for hours. This is a terrible
time for my computer to be down as I have just started classes. Any
help would be appreciated.

I also had crashes when trying to enter the control panel or system
information, but not every time. These are some errors i pulled from
the event log.

If you can get to Safe Mode you should be able to run Spybot Search and
Destroy and your other security software. I suspect some kind of virus or
spyware, possibly a worm, has infected your system. There could also be a
problem with your RAM or video card. Check the RAM first.

try going tino internet options and disableing third party broswer
extentions support. Also make sure you have a recent version of add aware
and spybot. not only do they update the definition files, they also update
the program and you need to re-download it ever once in a while.

From the error you posted, it apears that somethign internet related is
trying to access a file in the temp intet directory. this kind of leads me
to think it is spyware or some other internet related tool. you might also
be able to just unplug the network cable and see if the aplication doesn't
start to run. This should allow you to do whatever mantinence you want.

BTW true vector service seems t be related to the firewall. (zone alarm)
there might be a problem with that. Of course it is inet related and
integrate into the system pretty deply. If you are running zone alarm try
diableing the xp firewall if it is on or turning zone alarm off long enough
to test. Also after a quick google search it apears that there is/was some
update fixing a problem simular to your form zone alarm. Try looking at
thier site. after a short search i fond a proceedure to reset the database
for it.

Here are the Instruction for resetting the Database:
Reset the database this way
1. Shut down the client from the system tray(Rightclick ZA icon choose
shutdown)
2. access the c:\windows\internet logs folder
3. Delete the backup.rdb and iamdb.rdb files.
4. Restart ZA

there are more sugestions there but this seems to eb the quick and dirty
method of resolving your problem.

Spybot can't complete the repair, even in safe mode.

What do you mean by check the RAM? My device manager says all is
healthy.

I run spybot and adaware and update them regularly, I ran adawre,
which fixed a few ad cookies. Spybot got a few more, but it will not
repair them before the computer freezes, even in safe mode.

I'm not so sure this is spyware. I think it might be a driver,
although it appears that they are all updated from looking in the
device manager.

I never thought I'd be happy to get a blue screen, but I did.

It says. The IO manager has detected a violation by a driver that is

being verified. The faulty driver must be debugged and replaced

with a working version.

Hi Kit4kat,

Let make sure it is really this driver causing the problems and not that
there is another driver on your system writing to memory it isn't supposed
to. To determine what driver is causing the problem I need you to enable
driver verifier.
Steps:
1) Windows Key + R
2) Type in 'verifier' and hit enter
3) Make sure 'Create Standard Setting' is selected and hit next
4) Click on 'Select all drivers installed on this computer' and hit Finish
5) Reboot

There is a possibility that your computer will crash on reboot. If this
occurs hit F8 when rebooting just before the windows logo screen and select
the safe mode boot option. Follow the same steps above but on step 4 choose
'Select driver names from a list'; hit next; check the box next to any
driver where the provider is not Microsoft; hit Finish; reboot.

This will slow the performance of you computer a little while enabled but
will hopefully catch the driver causing corruption. Next time you crash
the blue screen will hopefully say something like
"DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION". If this occurs please send the
corresponding minidump (by default it is at c:\windows\Minidump ) my way.
If you have any questions or I didn't explain something well enough don't
hesitate to e-mail me back. Good Luck,

Hi Joshua,

I sent you an email with the dump file attached. I looked up the
driver that showed in the bluescreen message. It is apparently
compatible with my 845 chipset. I'm wondering if I should roll back
the driver. I'll wait to hear from you before I do that.

Hi Jazz,

Thanks for your help. I also noticed that error seems to be with zone
alarm as i was googling for answers. I think this happens when the
computer is shut down suddenly and zone alarm doesn't have an
opportunity to shut down. I'm pretty sure this is not my main problem.
Thanks again,

Kathy

Hi There,

sorry if this might sound stupid, but have you tried to re-start in safe
mode and then scan in safe mode, also empty temp tmp folders there is a
free utility www.ccleaner.com which can also scan for problems in the
regisrtry. What is that truevector service you have running?? try to
disable it in safe mode and see how you go.

Because of all the probs and loopholes in internet explorer, not to
mention the spyware that IE lets in, try using firefox
(www.mozilla.org). Please do not see this as an anti-microsoft post,
but give credit where credit is due. I have been using firefox for over
6 months now and no spyware at all.

Hope this is a bit of help

I still haven't fixed this problem. I think I might have to reformat,
but I'm hoping someone here can save me that trouble. I went to
Gateway's website to see if there were any driver updates for my
system. There were none. I updated my nvidia geforce mx2 mx/mx400
driver from the nvidia website. no joy. Then I went into the device
manager and had windows update check for new drivers. it put my nvidia
driver back to the previous driver. No joy. On my scsi raid host
controller. it began to pdate the driver. I then got a blu screen
which said Bad_Pool_Caller with stop message 0x000000c2 (0x0000009A,
0x00000002, 0x00000044, 0x206B6444). I think this may be the problem
driver. Does anyone have any advice?
