Computer is very ill

My computer is very ill at the moment and after running all spy ware and anti
virus software I can think of its got worse. At this point its time to get
out the back up copy I was given when I bought it from the shop. I tried to
restore the computer to how it was when it was supplied new but the back up
disc is a DVD with two files installed on it. Problem 1, is the computer was
backed up using Norton Ghost which I don’t have so I’m unable to open the two
GHO files.

So my next plan of attack was to install my windows XP disc and start
again from scratch as I would rather do that then pay for a program I don’t
want just to open to files. Problem 2, I loaded the disc and it rebooted then
told me that the drivers aren’t installed on this CD and that the drivers on
the computer are corrupt. The reboot stopped at this point so I now have to
ether find out if I can download the drivers from somewhere. Can I download
the drivers needed from Microsoft? If not I’m going to have to download
Norton Ghost which I don’t want.

Any suggestions and solutions would be much appreciated as long as there
legal. Iv posed the same question on another forum site and my first response
was a link where I could download an illegal copy of Norton ghost. If I need
Norton Ghost I will pay for it it’s not a big problem but I don’t see why I
should just to open two files.

Alan

It would be useful to know from what your computer is suffering that makes
it so ill. Signs, symptoms and history please? It may have come to a time
when the patient is too ill to do anything other than to put it out of its
misery. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. In other words it
may not be economical to do anything with.

You need to boot your computer from the DVD........that will start Ghost
automatically on the DVD. Read your user Manual on how to do a complete
restore....

The computer is just over 2 years old. It has been used for downloading
music/DVD's by my 18 year old daughter. When she could be bothered to run any
software that found any nastyist she just deleted in stead of sending to
quoranteen (spelt wrong). I have tried to find used manual but its not on
computer any more. Dose microsoft have a tool to repaire damaged or missing
files.

You haven't responded to my previous post prompting for information as to
why you think your computer is so ill. However, from what you have just
posted I would assume that it has a serious spyware / virus problem.

On the assumption you haven't got a backup the best solution is to -

disconnect old hard disk
install another hard disk
install windows
install motherboard drivers
install modem software
install anti-threat software
update windows
update anti-threat software
re-connect old hard disk
scan old hard disk for threats
copy user files from old hard disk to new hard disk

Doing this ensures your old hard disk becomes your backup resource from you
can copy any files which you miss the first time around.

That sound’s easy apart from one thing. I wouldn’t have a clue what any of
this things look like or how to find them or where to look. I have run loads
of anti virus and spy ware programs (windows XP dealing with an infected PC)
and followed this article to the letter. The computer keeps crashing and then
i get message, your computer has just recovered from a series error. Surly
there must be some sort of repair or fix it program that will check for
errors, missing files/damaged files.

Your system needs a complete overhaul, lord have mercy Dude, might just be
easier to get a new one, ya think, two years old it ain't BTW..
Don't take this wrong it could be done, but would cost you much time & some
money to upgrade, keep it as a project if you want, but it needs more than
SFC can ever do for it, I'm afraid..
Cheers

IF your computer is infected AND it cannot be fixed by software THEN the
only way is to, in effect, start again. The fix I described works. If you
don't feel confident or competent to do it (and it's a good thing to admit
it now rather than Destroy It Yourself) then you'll have to get someone in.
The cost should be no more than the cost of a hard disk drive and about an
hours work.

Regards.
