Computer is dragging and freezing while playing cd game

HELP! Have tried everything obvious ....

While playing computer games only ... the computer starts
dragging and moving in slow motion for a few seconds ...
15 or 20 seconds, I would guess .... then resumes normal
playing again.

First thought it might be CD ROM ... but this happens when
a game is installed on the computer as well. Then we
thought it might be a virtual memory (paging file)
problem, received advice on how to check that and
everything seems to be okay there.

Have even done a complete restore back to the original
factory settings and that didn't even work.

Have dumped all kinds of files that we thought might be
taking up too much space ... but even with a stripped
computer running no additional programs in the
background ... we still have the same problem.

Any advice is appreciated!

What kind of games, are they 3D enhanced like Command and
Conquer: Generals, completly 3D, or just older ones. If
their one of the first two make sure you have a good
enough graphics card with enough memory. If you do get a
new one anyway because their usefull and you can get
decent ones for cheap on sale.

.
I suppose ... Diablo II is the one I play the most ... my
daughter plays Disney games like 101 Dalmations. But this
is a really fast computer (bought last year) and we've
played for months and months with no problems like
this ... and I'm not sure when things starting to change.
Tried to restore back to a very early point ... but no
change.

When this type of thing happens, the first suspects are maintenance:
Disk Cleanup first, Defragment second.

and you could also do a windows files scan from start/run then type sfc
/scannow with your xp CD in the drive

It's probably a service running in the background like an antivirus program
scheduled etc.
