Computer Infection

Wondering if someone could help me?
My computer re-booted itself and when it came back on it said "Your computer
is infected" there's a red ball with an X in the middle on my task bar. When
I put my mouse on it says: Your computer is infected! Windows has detected
spyware infection! It is recommended us special antispyware tools to prevent
data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date
antispyware for you.
Click here to protect your computer from spyware!

I do not have an anti virus installed at the moment, I had to uninstall
Norton 6 months ago because it slowed my computer to the point that I could
not use it anymore.
I'm running WinXP and several people told me I would be okay without it.
One of the messages said I had a Trojan

Can you help me?

more than likely your infected with Malware.
do a search for hijackthis, read the instructions carefully.
Also check out spybot S&D and adaware.
Do not respond to that request currently on your pc, that's an infection
trying to get installed, you really need an Antivirus installed, also look at
a software firewall.

Your computer is infected with a rogue antimalware program. It is called a
"rogue" because it pretends to be one of the Good Guys when it really is a
Bad Guy. Goodness knows what else your machine is infested with besides
that since you've been running without an antivirus. Even though I don't
like Norton products, I'm willing to bet part of the reason your machine
was slow was because of malware, not just because of Norton.

Probably you should just back up your data and do a clean install of Windows
but if you want to try and clean things up, here you go:

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do
all scans in Safe Mode.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://tinyurl.com/yoeru3 - download link and more instructions

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your
malware here:

When all else fails, get guided help. Choose one of the specialty forums
listed at the first link. Register and read its posting FAQ. DO NOT POST
LOGS IN THE MS NEWSGROUPS.

Standard disclaimer: I can't see and test your computer myself, so these are
just suggestions based on many years of being a professional computer tech;
suggestions based on what you've written. You should not take my
suggestions as a definitive diagnosis. If you can't do the work yourself
(and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent
of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops
are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be
so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. If possible, have
all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

I have a computer that is infected - I have Windows XP Professional on it.
It does not have any service packs on it. It was a "hand me down" computer
so I do not have the Windows XP disk and before it locked up - I was not able
to get a verification on the copy.

It was working just slowly with a lot of pop ups and rogues.

I ran Avast on it. It deleted all the files in programs that were
installed. I did not delete any files that were in the system 32 folder
although there were some that were infected.

Now I can get the computer to come all the way on with the icons and
everything but I cannot get anything to open at all. I can click on an icon
and it will highlight like it wants to try to open it but then it gets stuck.

It may have a hidden Recovery partition that you can use to restore the
machine to OOBE (original manufacturer's) state. If not, purchase a retail
copy of WinXP SP2, format & to a clean install.

It's not worth your or anyone else time to attemp to get the machine cleaned
up if it hadn't been kept fully patched for the last 6-8 years.

Run it again and let it delete everything it finds including files located
in the system 32 folder. After that use my Explorer Shell Fix tool. Download
it here http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm

PA Bear, she/he/it is another one for my killfile. Her/his/its website is
marked as risky by SiteAdvisor.

That same website says my files are safe which just goes to show you that
what people say about me is wrong.

Why are /your/ Reviews the only "good" ones here:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/pcbutts1.com ?

The problem is that most, if not all, of the files on your site were STOLEN
from someone else (including Microsoft).

You are NOT an MS MVP and never have been. If anyone wants to confirm this
FACT for themselves, they only have to contact (e-mail address removed).

Anybody can post a review on that site. MacAfee then scans the site and
posts the results. They have done that several times already and as always
it comes up clean. So your post about it being a dangerous site is a big fat
lie. You only post your crap here about me because it's all you have left.
You have sent emails to everybody including Microsoft about me. You think
you deserve some kind of respect from them because of your MVP status and
when you don't get it you start crying like a baby. You are just as bad as
Leythos the stalker. You need to grow up and stop crying when you don't get
your way. Nobody who is as big a thief as you and others try to make me out
to be will still be around. The fact is I am not a thief and you can't bear
that fact so you only choice now are these news groups. GROW UP!

BTW if I stole something from MS why is it still on my site? them of all
people would be able to do something about it if it were true.

Actually, you're going to be hearing from MS about that very soon.

PS: You STOLE an older, ineffective build of the tool!

Yes, but perhaps not for long and you'll probably be forced to switch to yet
another ISP, too.

M

Ms. L MVP

More lies, I've been with same ISP for over 10 years. I say again GROW UP.
Next month I will embarrass you again when in fact nothing will be removed
from my website. You are nothing but a big crybaby who is crying in these
newsgroup because nobody will help you in your frivolous campaign against
me. It's not hard hard in fact it is easy to shut down any website provided
what you say is the truth. But when you LIE nothing happens stop telling
lies and grow up crybaby.

Why don't you tell everyone now what you think is illegal or stolen on my
site that way I can embarrass you now instead of later. Make sure you post
proof so that it is not your word against mine. Come on crybaby show
everybody what you've been crying about. Make sure you post which files you
say are dangerous and will harm computers and explain why then post the
proof from actual users of my files who's system it broke. Google is your
friend make sure you use that excellent search tool. Put up or shut up.
