computer getting slow for not the usual reasons

P

paulmars

my user manual does not say that. What page#?

Mine says:
....two inline memory modules (DIMM) sockets support 6 banks....to install
push..... into the DIMM socket. The DIMM Module can fit...."

"insert DIMM memory into DIMM socket..."

then:

"when the led is on do not install or remove SDRAM from socket"

all on page 12.

Thanks
paul

PS: I go out now and start another memory burn-in test.

I was seeking to establish what was the maximum memory which could be
installed.

Is your hard drive formatted as NTFS? What is the cluster size. An
easy way to establish the cluster size is to look in a Disk
Defragmenter Report.

Hope this helps.

C is NTFS, so are 2 of the other 3 partitions. One partition is FAT32
cluster size is default, 4k NTFS, 16k FAT32.

4th memory test = ok
4 1/2 hour memory burn in = ok
10 1/2 hour cpu burn in = ok
Considering testing again after the burn in.
Downloaded another tester, un zipped it and I was dragging a file accros the
desktop and system rebooted. It does not reboot during tests or burn it, but
dragging a file does it.

been done, one of the first things I learned after switching to xp

Gotcha. I wasn't paying attention to the date; I read elsewhere in the
thread that you ran HijackThis, and I mistakenly thought I was reading
your recent encounter!

Still, it would be a good idea to let us know about your most recent HJT
results; it's possible you have something running that you'd be better
off without. Since most people don't like HJT logs posted in this
newsgroup, please post a link.

my problem remained after I zeroed my entire HDD and reinstalled xp. I think
this eliminates hijacks

I m aware of all my startups and active services and check regularly for
unneeded items.

it has happened twice, seemingly at random, so no not yet after a boot,
although I really would not kno. If I boot my computer and leave the room,
maybe it did reboot itself after booting up, however I kinda doubt it.

I rarely go into safe mode and will not go there to see if it might reboot.

P

paulmars

I hav none of those other problems listed. Last auto-reboot was not during a
desktop drag. This, like the temporary freeze during right click context
menu selection are just random occurrences pointing to a larger problem.
Just like my slowness is not a result of an intrusion. Its gotta be
hardware.

paulmars,
I was experiencing a similar problem My System process was taking up upto
50% of the CPU and nothing I tried seemed to fix the problem. Scan your hard
drive for *.tmp files and see if you have a bunch of these files in your
virus definition folder that are 0 bytes. I found 20k on my scan and after I
deleted the files, everything went back to normal. Unfortunately, I dont
know what is creating these files so I'm sure the problem will be reoccuring.

thanks, but I zeroed my entire hard drive and reinstalled xp and had the
same problem.

How did you format the drive? As FAT32 or NTFS? Is it as one volume?

With a new installation you have to run Disk CleanUp and Disk
Defragmenter as soon as you have finished installing Windows XP
updates and programmes!

What readings are you getting from pagefilemon?

Have you tried adding memory?

Four partitions. C,E, and F are NTFS, D is FAT32. C is system. I did a
defrag since re-installing xp.

I never use disk cleanup. Occasionally I delete temps and delete recycle
files. I do other maintenance too.

I am not monitoring the pagefile. I am going under the premise that it
worked last install, so I reinstall with the same sys settings...

Except I can find no problems with my hardware.

Think about my situation uploading to youtube and google video. Everytime,
it starts out good but gets slower and slower until it stops. Sometimes
connection speed will vary and I have experienced this. But this situation
is now very consistent. This was the start of my computer problem. Then a
week or two later I noticed other things getting slower and somewhat
spasmatic. For maybe 6 or 8 weeks now, not a single video upload has
completed.

Tonight I am going to try uploading in safe mode. I am not even sure that I
can start uploading in safe mode. But if I can, lets see if it completes.

How do you reach this conclusion "I am going under the premise that it
worked last install, so I reinstall with the same sys settings..."?

Where have you placed the pagefile?

How often do you compact Outlook Express?

How are you preventing your system from being overun by temporary
internet files?

I kno it worked last install because I used it and I had no issues. Until
that last week or two when uploading stopped working and things started
getting slower, et all. So, I naturally suspected spyware, malware,
virus....When noting worked to bring my system back to its working state, I
zeroed the HDD and reinstalled xp pro. I then set it up just like I did
during the last install.

I find that temp files usually take care of themselves. Just the same
occasionally I delete all *.tmp, *.chk, ~*.*, after a reboot. I also weekly
update and run:
Ccleaner, mru blaster, spybot, avg anti virus and anti spyware, spyware
blaster, lavasoft ad-aware, winpatrol, and occasionally some online scans. I
have used Hijack, long ago, but since I started my weekly routine (over a
year ago) I have not had to post a Hijack log.

pagefile is in default C:\

I compact OE before I do a backup, about monthly. BTW my oe store is on D:,
as it was last install and the time before. Favs are also on D:, like
previously.

I do have one setting that is not the same as before. Previously I have used
FAT32 for my storage partitions (D,E,F), however that option was not
available for E: and F: this install For some reason NTFS was the only
choice. Not so with D:, which had the choice of FAT32 or NTFS. I always use
NTFS for the system partition(C).

I left after uploading had reached 7% under safe mode. It looked like it was
going slower then usually, but that may have been my cable isp. I returned
90 minutes later and the browser said:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical bla bla bla.

I closed that and opened a new instance of IE and tried to go to several
sites. All gave me "The page cannot be displayed...". So I rebooted into
normal mode and I can again cruz the net. Does safe mode internet access
time out?

all diagnostics say all hardware is ok. I know that maybe they did not find
the problem. Any suggestions?

I hav a computer TV card with TV recording ability. I hav had and hav been
using it for 16 months. I learned long ago that when I had lots of things
going, like cruzing the net, and uploading a video and editing a video along
with OE and ICQ and yahoo IM all going on at once, the TV recording would
stop after just a few seconds. The TV said it was still recording, but the
file stopped recording. After lots of experienting I figured out that too
many things going on and the system would close the recording after just a
few seconds.

Today for the first time in a while I started recording a show. I suspected
that I might hav this problem, so I checked the file and sure enough it
stopped recording after a few seconds. So I started closing apps and tryiung
to record. I never got it to work. I closed everything, including firewall,
anti-virus and teatimer. Only TV was opened and still it would not record
more then a few seconds..

I opened task mgr while watching TV and it said 0% cpu usage. Then it moved
up to 6, 8%. It continued to jump around staying mostly between 5 and 20%.
While watching this I clicked the TV record button and cpu usage jumped to
60%, then varied between 20 and 60%. Occasionally, it went below 20%, but
never above 60%. It continued this way until I stopped the recording after
about 10 seconds using the TV record stop button. After about 6 more seconds
the cpu usage returned to between 10 and 20%. The file had stopped recording
after just 2 or 3 seconds.

For 16 months I could record with av, firewall, teatimer, OE, IE, yahoo and
icq im, etc opened.

Are you using Peer-to-Peer or file sharing software? Could your ISP be
operating a Fair Usage Policy and restricting your downloading?
