Computer crash

I'm writing this in Safe mode.

I built computer in 2/07. Running perfect until now.
OS Vista Ultimate SP1
Video card ASUS EN7950GT GeForce 7950 GT 512M
MotherBd Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 2GB RAM

Cannot boot in full mode. Splash screen had vertical lines. If it gets
to the desktop it will reboot. Can get into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode error messages suggests Video Error.
Also ran MemTest86 V1.70. Came up with an error
Test 7
ADDR 0007867322C 1926.1 MB
Good 5bea03f1
Bad 1bea03f1
ERR-BITS 40000000

Went looking for a new video card. MB only has PCI Express X16 card
slot. It seems that new boards use PCI Express 2.0 X16.
Ques - Will a PCI Express 2.0 X16 video card work in my card slot?

Ques - Is there a way to test the 7950GT memory?

Ques - Do you think my RAM error could be causing this problem?

TIA. Appreciate your comments.

Memtest tests your system memory, NOT graphics memory. Logic would dictate
that if it gives you an error, you should be looking at your RAM as the
problem, NOT your video card. Pull out all sticks and test them one at a
time to find the faulty module.

Video memory maybe bad if you are getting lines or pixels that shouldn't be
there.

Yes.

Ques - Is there a way to test the 7950GT memory?

No. But if you see video artifacts like lines or random pixels, you
probably have bad memory somewhere.

Ques - Do you think my RAM error could be causing this problem?

TIA. Appreciate your comments.

Could be.

Tae,

Thanks for responding to the PCI Express 2.0 question. That opens up
more repair options if necessary.

BTW, After cleaning out the computer and reseating the video card and
memory sticks it seems to be working. Could have been a heat problem.
I'll try some graphics intensive pgms and see what happens.

Just to follow up on this thread, the problem was the Video card. New
video card and all is well.
