Computer Browser Service

Rodger

Hi I have a small home network with two computers, one Windows XP Home
Edition and One Vista Home Premimum. I while ago I had to reload my Vista
computer and I lost some of my network connectivity. I can print to my
windows xp computer so connectivity is there in some form. When I go into
network and control center I can't see other the other computer on my
network. Names and domain appear to be right in both computers because I can
print and I can access each computer through typing name directly (\\dad or
\\mom) in an address line. When I run browstat status I get "browsing is NOT
active on domain". "Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus".
Now I remember turning off browsing "Computer Browser" in the windows xp
computer last time I setup the network for some reason, i believe it was
conflicting with the Vista. When I looked at the "Computer Browser" in the
vista computer it set to Automatic but wasn't started, once I start it
manually the network is backup and browsing is restored. why doesn't it start
by itself? How can I get it to start by itself?

It could be a 3rd party software. For troubleshooting, you may try clean
boot.

Robert thanks for the reply. I tried it in Safe Mode with Networking and sure
enough the Computer Browser service is started and running. Thinking it might
be my Avira Antivirus I uninstalled it no luck, the computer browser service
still didn't start after reboot. I created a new user after turning on
network discovery and file sharing, restarting the Computer Browser service
was started in that profile. Figuring it must be something in my profile, I
tuned off and then back on again network discovery and file sharing with
reboots in between. Still doesn't turn on Computer Browser service. Is there
anyway to edit the registry to turn the service on in my profile? I really
don't want to create another profile and transfer all my stuff to it for this
minor problem or reload windows. I think I can live with turning the Computer
Browser service on manually if I need it...

Robert still no luck making the Computer Browser start automatically. I even
export and installed the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser registry from
another Windows Vista computer into this one. Still doesn't work. Oh and I
misspoke earlier about the new profile having the Computer Browser working it
doesn't. It was just working because I had turned it on manually in my user
profile. Any other suggestions? Thanks Rodger
