Compressed (Zip) Folders: Why does it show in some versions of WinXP?

J

John Diener

Some versions of Windows XP (Home and Professionsl) allow you to select a
New Compressed folder from the File menu in Widows Explorer, while other
versions only allow files and folders to be compressed by going to
Properties then Advanced to choose to compress the file/folder. Does anyone
understand how this difference occurs? Is the Compressed folder feature
installed as part of a Windows Update?

The compressed ZIP folder is a part of the operating system.

It may be altered when one installs a 3rd party ZIP manager such as Winzip [depending upon the installation settings chose by the operator on installation].

You're right. The computer displaying the problem did have ZipItFast
installed at one time. It has been uninstalled. Now, how to repair the
damage?

John,

You can get back the "Compressed Folder" option by typing REGSVR32 ZIPFLDR.DLL in RUN box.

BTW, Windows XP supports two types of compression, NTFS compression and compression by using the Compressed (zipped) Folders feature. Both are different. This knowledge article might help!

Hi

Try the following from Start>Run to re-register .zip files:

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Ramesh and Will Denny, thanks for your responses. I finally got a chance to
get back on the "problem computer" and tried your recommendations. I got a
confirming message that the command executed properly. However, I didn't get
the response that I was looking for. My expectation was that I would now see
the the icon and Compressed (zipped) Folder command on the sub menu of
File-New in the Windows Explorer window (and in the right-click menu when
clicked on the right pane). Is this the right expectation? How else do I
find the Compressed Folder?

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip
Double-click (default) and replace the existing value with "CompressedFolder"

-or-

Use this REG script

-------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip]
@="CompressedFolder"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\CompressedFolder]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\CompressedFolder\ShellNew]
"Data"=hex:50,4b,05,06,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

--------------------

Restart and try again. You may need to run REGSVR32 ZIPFLDR once.
