compose email in the reading pane?

Hi,

is it possible to compose email in the reading pane? Kind of Gmail
style?

Right now, whenever I create new email, or reply to an existing one -
any time I need to write email, I get a new window. Is this
unavoidable?

MS Outlook 2003.

The reading pane is (surprise!) Read-Only. You need to open a compose
message form to reply or create new message.
