Component Services applet does not open

I have a suspicion that this is related to the problem we're experiencing
with the critical updates that I mentioned yesterday, but it might not.

We have found that it is impossible to access Component Services from our
users' machines, even if we're logged in as the domain administrator.
Specifically, when we get to the point of attempting to open the Computer
folder in Component Services, the Component Services MMC just closes. No
errors; it just closes.

Another thing which is odd, is that now we cannot uninstall any of our COM+
apps which we've installed on those PCs. Whenever we do, we get an error
message saying that either we're running in safe mode of that the Windows
Installer is corrupted.

The server is a Windows 2003 Server. It hosts both the database (SQL Server
2000) and all of the COM+ components, which were written in VB6. SP1 for
2003 has not been installed on this system.

The client machines are all Windows XP Pro machines, with SP2.

Any ideas as to what's causing this?
