Completely disable automatic updates

The Windows XP Pro auotmatic update service is interfering with audio and
video applications on my editing machine. I check for updates on a regular
basis and manually install them. I don't need this. Even when I turn off
automatic updates or disable the service, I still get a popup warning message
when I boot up. This sometimes happens before critical drivers (such as the
one for my graphics tablet) load and sometimes prevents them from loading (or
even from my being able to close the dialog.) How do I turn this thing off,
once and for all?

Change the Windows Update service to manual start.

If you want to do an update, then just start it manually.

Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select
Properties, Automatic Updates. Uncheck the box before Automatic
(Recommended) and check the box before Notify me but do not
automatically download or install. Click on Apply and OK and close all
windows. Restart your computer.

Hope this helps.
