Compatible w/ older program?

David

This concerns adding older software to new PC that came
with Win XP. After installing QuickVerse 4.0 ("QV4") and
trying to start it, QV4 always aborts immediately. The
only real info Windows XP supplies is "... not a valid
Win32 program." This seems contradictory to the fact that
the program ran smooth as butter with Windows 98. I've
tried the XP compatibility mode settings and nothing makes
it run the QV4.

I've tried to uninstall QV4 (to reinstall in different
directory), but the "Remove/Modify Software" program menu
does not see the QV4 as a program to uninstall. I think
this is either because (a) the program is in the root of
the C:\ directory rather than under C:\Programs, or (b)
when I try to start any "ffastun" files/programs (3-4 are
listed) in that directory, they also are "... not a valid
Win32 program" --and "Windows needs to know what program
created them." So do I.

Can anyone help unravel this, please?

A quick trip to their website and I found this info. Always check the
programs website first.
QuickVerse and Windows XP!
With the advent of Microsoft's newest operating system, Windows® XP, our
Technical Support staff has been testing QuickVerse® extensively on Windows
XP Home and Professional Editions with excellent results!

In our tests, we experienced NO PROBLEMS with XP Home or XP Pro. Many
customers have already informed us of their success in installation and
operation of the newer versions of QuickVerse with XP. However, we have
discovered that QuickVerse 5 and earlier, and Membership Plus 5 and earlier
are generally not compatible with XP. Therefore, we do not advise using
these older versions on XP. And we are unable to support issues regarding
their installation if you have difficulties.

Additionally, we have discovered that there may be an issue with some Dell
brand computers running Windows XP. We know that many of our customers are
successfully using QuickVerse on a Dell computer with XP, but there are
others who are having problems. Typically, the problems occur during
installation and only affect QuickVerse, not the computer as a whole. So if
you are in doubt, and have QuickVerse, then install it. If done properly, as
with any installation, no harm will come to your computer, even if the
installation fails.

Why don't the older versions of QuickVerse and Membership Plus work on XP?
Well, that's a good question. Windows XP is a dramatically different
operating system than it's older versions. Sometimes older programs rely on
features that the new version no longer has (or no longer has exactly as
before). Sometimes those missing features are essential to the proper
operation of the program. In those cases, the program usually crashes, or
won't install.

When an operating system, like Windows 98 or Me, is upgraded significantly,
many times severe changes are made to the operating system that make it
difficult for older programs, written for the older systems to work.

This same problem has happened several times before. When Windows 95 came
out, many people found that their old DOS programs wouldn't work. Some of
them did, but many didn't. Unfortunately, dealing with upgrading is just one
of the disadvantages of the computer industry.

That file you mention (not PH but you - you stole my name give it back) is from FindFast in Office and has nuffin to do with QV. Nor can you open them. I'd imagine you upgraded as office uses XP's equivelent now.

PS you can delete them, they'll be remade if they are actually being used which I doubt.

Why do you think that since it ran fine in Win98 it will work fine
with XP?

Thanks, purple. I did check the site, and even looked up
and emailed Parsons Church Group, but never found the page
you quoted. I love QV4 but tried QV5 and QV6 upgrades on
wife's PC, and did not like their operation. (She says
QV8 is on its way here, but... Guess I'll make my new PC
into a dual boot system with w98 also, to run QV4.

Thank you, mr. Candy. I think that answers my concern
about maybe simply deleting "program" files, working or
not. I did install Partition Magic after the QV4 (without
repartitioning yet) so I don't think I could just go back
to an older registry file date.
