Compatibility Problems with Office 97

Since we installed Xp at work, things just don't seem the same with our
decrepit Word 97. When we try and copy and paste text or images into a
document it freezes with the Not Responding message.
It can take ages just to open or save a document in Word or Excel even to
the local hard drive and the PCs no longer recognise .jpg files. If we
double-click a .jpg file in Explorer for example, Photo Editor opens, but
with the message "No File Format Information can be Found in the Registry".
Anyone have a clue what's going on and how I can rectify things? Cheers.

Hi,

I am not an expert just have some experiences to share,

How did you install XP? Did you perform an upgrade directly on the current
system or do a clean installation?

The reason for the question is, again based on my experience, that an
upgrade is more unstable than a clean installation as many system files and
registries tend to be confused and sometime messed up in the process.

Also please make sure that you have updated all drivers and run Windows
Update to make sure everything installed in the system are designed
specifically for Windows XP.

If you did perform an upgrade, I'd suggest to backup everything and do a
clean installation, but please do find related articles from MS or the net
for how to backup important data before formatting your HDD.

Hope this helps.
