Comparable Radeon 9800 Pro 128 DDR

I have the Radeon 9800128 DDR and I very happy with it. Unfortunately I
bought a new PC that doesn't have an AGP slot. ( My bad for not doing my
homework). I am using a 20 inch Dell flat screen at a resolution of 1600 X
1250. I am looking for a PCI card that is comparable to this one. It must
have DVI output. (What a difference it is). Thanks for any helpful info.

They say that X700 is equivalent to 9800. A few extra dollars over
your limit gets you one with 256 Mb.

For less than $100 you're not going to get equal to 9800 Pro performance.
Pricewatch has a number of 6600GT PCIe cards in the $125 bgallpark. There's
an X700 non-pro PCIe for about $110, but your 9800 Pro is a fair bit faster
than this.

I must be pretty dopey but didn't you say the 9800 was faster???

Depends, I bought my ASUS EAX700Pro 256Mb card on ebay for $117
shipped. It is faster than the 9800Pro although not by a whole lot. It
would be the most cost effective solution for his situation though...

for a video card?

The card requires a PCIe x16 slot. PCIe x16 should be a bit longer than your
old AGP slot.

An X700 Pro PCI-Express should give you about the same performance.
They start about $117 including shipping.
The regular X700 starts around $95
The new X1600 starts around $130

Under interface put PCI.Click search.
Because of the slow PCI interface your choices are limited to older
technology.Mostly Radeon 9200 or 9250 and Geforce FX 5200 and 5500's
none of
which are even close to your 9800 in performance.Some have DVI and will

do 1600x1250.You will be disappointed with performance in newer games
and
limited to 640x480 in most.My old Geforce 3 is faster than these
cards-Vic

But it should have a PCI-Express slot for graphics.

I didn't but it is still a pretty potent card. That is why the new
cheap cards struggle to keep up with it. It probably doesn't have some
of the fancier features of more modern cards. I've been looking round
at new cards (I don't know why as I've got no money). What £150 or so
will buy in the UK is pretty phenomenal by 9800 standards.

Nvidia just released one of their 6x00-series cards for PCI.
6200 if I remember correctly. This would be much faster
than an ATI 9100.

No doubt about it, my 9800 pro 128 is faster than an x700. I bought an
x700 card as an "upgrade" last month. I guess I didnt do my homework.
Framerates were noticeably less than my stock 9800 pro. I think its the
256 bit memory access that does it. I wouldnt buy anything with a 128
bit memory bus, especially for higher resolutions. As for the OP, if you
mean a PCI-E slot then there are lots of good deals for x800 or x1xxx
cards on ebay. Even check out newegg, especially their refurb dept. But
be careful and check out reviews because with ati's new model numbers
bigger doesnt always mean better.

better in frame rate. Maybe you've purshase a cheap ass x700pro like
sapphire or power color witch some time are unclocked.

Ps: the texel fillrate is 3.04 for the 9800pro and 4.XX for the
x700pro witch is the performance in rendering 3d image. Do not only
consider memory bandwith it's a trap.

Well, if thats the case, he needs to send that computer back to where it
came from and buy something else. Especially if he has any kind of
special video needs ie. gaming or super high resolutions, etc..

Yeah, I said x700, the pro is about the equivalent of the 9800 pro from
what Ive read.. And yes I had a saphire x700 agp that was worse than my
9800 pro. I just dont think that the x700 series is worth spending a
dime on since its not really any faster than the previous series. Unless
prices drop to like $50 or $60 bucks.
