Command prompt closes right after opening ... crashes

Hi all,

I have a weird problem. Everytime I try to open the dos prompt, it
flashes the window and it just closes. It's almost as if it crashes. I
try to run commands by using the Run feature, but they don't get
executed. Instead the command prompt just flashes for less than a
second and disappears.

I checked for viruses and spyware using Norton AV 2006 and it found
nothing.

Could it be that I have a corrupt cmd.exe? Or is there something else
that might be wrong?

It is possible that cmd.exe got corrupted or that some malware
placed a substitute processor somewhere. Try this:
- Run cmd.exe while in Safe Mode
- Instead of just typing cmd.exe, type this:
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
What happens?

....especially look for a bogus file "CMD.COM"

Some things will do that from the run option unless you tell the program
what it is supposed to do, so it may be working properly but you are
misunderstanding its' use. Use command switches to tell the executable what
it is doing for these items.

The OP was quite clear in his post: He is unable to start
a Command Processor. The Command Processor does
not require any switches to become resident. I suspect
that his inability to run other programs is a secondary
effect - let's resolve the Command Processor issue first,
then have a look at the rest!
