Command Prompt box opens when i run programs on XP

For some reason when I run (any) programs including bootup, a command prompt
box opens up on the screen.

I know that the prompt is DOS, but do not know why the system has decided to
run cmd.exe; previously i installed a program which ran on Win 95, with no
compatibility problems what-so-ever. Could the installation of this program
have something to do with it.

I wonder if your problem started after downloading the 14 august updates?
as my command.com programs appeared in the Startup folder, I disabled them.
If you are using the Defender program, it may help you to disable these
MS-DOS, unsigned programs from loading
