I get this "COM Surrogate has stopped working" every time I click on a .AVI
file. Any idea what's causing it? I've not installed any codec's. A more
detailed look at the error shows:

Do you have Nero installed? It will cause this to happen.

Run DirectShow Filter Manager, and set the merit to "00200000" for all codecs
that start "Nero".

It's not a problem with Vista, but with the Nero MSI package. When a minimal
install is done, it part installs the codecs, which causes the errors you're
seeing when the Nero trying to thumbnail video clips.

Ahead need to fix the MSI.

You can get DirectShow filter manager here:

I found that if you change your default program to Nero play the file then
change it back to Windows Media Player that the error does not return.

What was the original issue? The first post is blank. I saw this yesterday
for the first time while trying to see the properties of a folder in Windows
Explorer.
