Columns and Column Format in Outlook Email

Hello all.

I am using Office 2003 Professional. I stopped using Outlook as my
default email client about two years ago, but I recently set it as the
default again and I'm trying to set it up in a way that I feel is more
"usable" for me.

One thing I did was to select the columns that show in the message
pane. I am using the view with the folders on the left, message pane
in the upper right, and preview pane bottom right.

I entered the Customize... dialog by right-clicking at the top of a
column and selected Fields... This was done while the Inbox was open.

I selected the fields I want to see in the message pane and then OK'd
back out of it. Next I went into Format Columns and tried to set all
columns as Best Fit, figuring I could always reset them to optimal
widths manually. When "Best Fit" didn't seem to work, I went back in
to Format Columns and was surprised to find that they were all set to
"Specific Width". So I just changed the width and saved it. But if I
re-enter the Format Columns settings, most are set for different
widths than I set them for.

The next time I opened a different mailbox, the columns were all set
to what I guess is the default - the same view I started with when I
changed them in the Inbox. Since I have a lot of mailboxes/folders, I
have no desire to configure the column settings separately for each.

How can I set the column view globally for all - or for multiple -
mail folders?

Also, how can I get the column widths to stay at the width I set?

Thanks.
