column header size limit in crosstab query

Kelly

Hello all,

I am trying to create a crosstab query in Access 2000.
However I get an error "too many crosstab column headers
(259)". Does anyone know the size limit for column
headers in a crosstab query and is there a way to
increase this size?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Kelly

Crosstab queries are meant to give a quick snapshot view of data not return
every field in the table. Limit your crosstab headers to only those that are
needed to provide the information sought.

If you have 259 field headers, then you have a serious problem with your
table design. I would run the table under the table analyzer provide in
Access to see what recommendations they say to make against the table. In
addition, I would learn about these concepts: referential integrity;
normalization of tables and relationships; all of which can be learned
through searches on the Internet or Microsoft's Knowledge Base site.

Dear Kelly:

The limit would be 256 and cannot be extended.

The real problem would probably be dependent on how you hope to use
this. In a report, you won't ever find paper that wide. Same with
displaying it on screen.

You can probably break it up into pieces containing the left-most
column (that's where I "identify" each row) and different sets of the
crosstab-generated columns. You can print separate reports for each
set of columns, up to a reasonable paper width. You can use a scroll
bar control on a form to scroll across, requerying each time for the
new columns necessary.

Those are some general ideas for a solution to what is probably more
of a practical problem than a technical one.
