Column groups adjacent to each other (with no column in between)

I would like to create two adjacent column groups, as shown in the following
example:

Group 1: Columns B through D
Group 2: Columns E through G

Notice that Group 1 is right next to Group 2. There is no column separating
Group 1 from Group 2.

When I create adjacent column groups (or when I delete a column that
separates two groups, Excel converts the two groups into a SINGLE group
spanning all of the columns.

How can I create two column groups adjacent to each other without a dividing
column in between?

Thanks!

AFAIK, Can't be done!

You could reduce the width of that required "summary" column,
or hide it completely.
Hiding does, of course, cause a loss of functionality.

I have successfully tried to HIDE and UNHIDE the separating column. That
works, but is a royal PITA.

Reducing the width of the separating column produces unintended
consequences.

Thanks!
