Having found occasional files which do not have the required codec, I have
downloaded the K-Lite codec pack from http://www.codecguide.com/ but I do no
know to which folder in XP(SP2) this should be installed. Also, is it better
to install all the codecs in the pack, or only the ones which are needed?

I installed the K-Lite Codec pack 'Basic' only last week it in its own
directory (sorry folder!) and it all works OK. I think some of the
actual files get installed in Windows/System32 anyway. I installed
using Total Uninstall. Where there's a choice, I would only install
codecs which are needed.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try. BTW I'm amazed at the speed with

Howody Frank: I download this page of instructions from the web a
while back (I don't remember where or by who) but it works great for
loading codecs onto a system so that you don't get any conflicts
between them. Feel free to update the individual codec packs as
needed:

<quote>
Installation of Codecs

If you have a movie and cant seem to get it to play, odds are you have
a conflicting or missing codec. A CODEC (compressor/decompressor)
allows you to play movies and such. To find out exactly what codecs
are required to watch your movie, you can use one or both of two
excellent little utilities: AVICodec and Gspot. Both AVICodec and
GSpot can be used to determine the codecs required for a movie to
play. AVICodec, despite its name has better MPEG capabilities and thus
is reccomended for MPEG files (such as those for (S)VCDs). GSpot on
the otherhand is far more efficient for scanning AVI files. Both
programs offer unique features also, AVICodec allows you to queue up
and entire folder to for checking in addition to providing direct
links to sites where codecs can be downloaded; GSpot allows for
'rendering' of files (to check to see if the system can actually play
the file with the available codecs and to check for fakes. AVICodec
can be downloaded from
http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media?sid=9388&m=5&url=http://avicodec.duby.info/
and GSpot can be downloaded from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

NOTES
1. Only install codecs that you need... installing mass codecs (i.e.,
like the way WindowsXP does with drivers) will not work since many of
the codecs are inter-conflicting. This is especially the case with the
Nimo Codec Pack.
2. If you get a FOURCC Code of 0. Odds are you have a FAKE. You can
check the FourCC using GSPot.

STEP-BY-STEP CODECs
1. UNINSTALL ALL YOUR CODECS (DivX, Nimo, XviD, etc). For more insight
on the nitty gritty codecs, see
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/81570

2. Install Indeo Codecs. This should include the Indeo3, Indeo4 and
Indeo5 Codecs. Grab it at http://codecs.nm.ru/iv5setup.exe or
http://home.eunet.no/~pereivin/iv5setup.exe

3. Install DivX 5.x You can grab it from
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/divx_pro_for_windows.cfm.
You can specify the installation path and whether or not to install
the DivX Player

4. If you want to, install the DivX Player You can specify the
installation path during the install. You can grab it from
http://download.divx.com/player/DivXPlayerInstaller.exe

5. Install the Nimo 5.0 Build 8. This is a messy one and can be
potentially ruinous if you choose the default installation. You can
grab it from: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/6/48608
Install it as follows (Instructions for Build 9 are posted on a later
date):

10. Install any software DVD player. The two most popular are PowerDVD
(http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/powerdvd.cfm)
and WinDVD
(http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/windvd.cfm)

11. Download DivFix and extract it to the DivFix folder in your NIMO
installation (default C:\Program Files\NimoCodec Pack\DivFix\).
Overwrite whatever files may be there already. You can grab DivFix
from http://download.divfix.maxeline.com/DivFix110.zip

12. Download AviFix. It serves a similar purpose to DivFix and between
the both of them, you can fix most movies. You can grab it from
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avifix.html

There you have it! This configuration should allow you to view almost
any movie you may come across._____

Installing the K-Lite pack solved a problem I had viewing .wmv files
where the movie image looked half colour/half negative.

Frank,

It's better to install just the CODEC's you need, but...

Every time I do that, I very soon run across a movie that won't play. So, I
gave up on the piecemeal route, and now install the K-Lite Mega CODEC pack
in its entirety. I have never noticed any instability or slow-down, so
that's the way I do it from now on.

Thanks for all the replies. I now have a clearer idea how to go about this.

You're right, John. I got PowerDVD bundled in with my DVD burner and
didn't even think once about the freeware aspect of it. This is a
quoted piece, so do you think that an asterick(sp) after #10 and then
a note at the bottom of the page would be sufficient to correct this
problem? I don't know the original author or website where I snagged
this puppy, but I kinda hate to mess with someone else work too much!

Nah. I knew you were quoting. Just wanted to clarify things was all. No
offense intended.

As for messing with someone else's work, you could maybe have ended the
quotation just before #10 and then listed Media Player Classic.

It's funny, the K-Lite codec pack doesn't work on my system, and I've
tried installing it several times - once on a fresh reinstall of the OS
(Millennium Edition). I always simply use the Coda Codec pack in spite
of the way it locks up at the end of the installation.

It always seems to play everything. Oh yeah, I do install the Windows
Media Player 9 Codecs, but I download them from the MS site. I also
install Quicktime Alternative (ver.1.48, the last one that will work
with ME TTBOMK) and Real Alternative.

At this point, I don't have any conflicts and every media file I
encounter plays.

QuickTime Alternative is on the 2005 PL (makes me more aware of the
changes). I think most of the updates that are posted in ACF only show
the 1.6x series => easy to assume the other branch became a dead end.

Well, at any rate, I'm thinking about finally having to give in an
install XP (Home SP2) on this sytem because I work on other people's
computers a lot. This is because I need to familiarize myself with the
quirks of that version of Windows. Once I do this, the Quicktime
Alternative problem won't matter to me.

I will also have another hard drive (hopefully it will arrive soon) on
which I will install a distro of Linux (top two candidates at this point
are Ubuntu or SUSE - either openSUSE or the evaluation version).
