I have a Vista Ulitmate conected to a domain that is set up to check for
updates automatically (default values, no WSUS server). The last couple of
weeks I get a message saying that Windows could not search for new updates
(followed by the error code above)

What can be wrong? I cannot find any useful information about this error code.

I had this happen to me to for the longest time. Not really sure what i did
to fix it, but here's a few things.

1) Flush the dns cache. Open a command prompt and type ipconfig/flushdns.
2) on the bottom of the Windows update screen, does it say "you receive
updates: Managed by your system administrator?

if so, right below that is a "check online for updates from Microsoft
update". I know it seems terribly obvious, but every once in awhile, i still
get an error if i just click on the "check for updates" button. But if i
click on the check online link, it works. Don't really know why unless it
has something to do with domain, policy, or other server settings that I'm
not privvy to.

Sorry,

Tried your suggestions but with no success :-(

At "You receive updates" it says - "For Windows and other products from
Microsoft Update"... And unfortunately there is no link below for "Check
online for updates from Microsoft update".

Any other tips?
