The XP Service Pack 2 Security Center does not have an antivirus. No
antivirus software comes built into Windows. The Security Center is
just an "alerter" which lets you know if your third-party antivirus is
working, your firewall is on, etc.

If you want to stop receiving the alerts, open the Security Center
applet from Control Panel and click on "Change how Security Center
alerts me".

If you'd like more help, then please tell us what you are trying to do;
what your end goal is.

When I open Windows Security from the XP control panel it will show the
Firewall being on - and I can turn this off. The next option is the
Automatic Updates shows as being "on". It is the last option that shows
Antivirus option as "on". So this green light "on" should turn to red "off"
when I close my antivirus program.

I really wouldn't worry about this. If you are temporarily disabling
your antivirus from within the av program itself (ex. by right-clicking
on its icon in the System Tray) in order to install a program, that is
good enough. Don't worry about the Security Center.

That is correct. It should turn red everytime the system detects that it
might not be working well or at all. Such as when you close your antivrus
(not just the window, you really need to shut it down) or when the antivirus
reports that it doesn't have the most recent virus update. However the
antivirus must be able to properly communicate with Security Center - older
antivrus sw might not.
You cannot turn off antivirus off via Security Center, you have to do this
by shutting down your antivirus. Antivirus is usually rooted deep in your
system, so if you're looking for a way to turn it off temporarily look for
such an option in your antivirus sw. Every good antivirus sw has such option

Run ... cmd

then

net start "Security Center"

net stop "Security Center"

You must include the quotes, btw.
