Buy another license, change the product key opn one of them and you can do
what you want with no argument from anyone/anything.

When the cloned disk with WinXP is booted on it, on the
"foreign" computer, activation will kick in.

You are talking about 2 different issues and trying to ask them as one
question.

The first is licensing.
The second is hardware differences between 2 PCs.
Ask again.

I'm planning to do the same thing with a Dell Dimension 3000 and a
Dimension 4600. The only differences in the hardware is the NIC, on-board
audio and on-board video. I'm hoping to clone the drive from the 3000 to
the 4600 and at least boot to Safe Mode if not to the XP desktop. I have
legit licenses for both XP installs.

Any other gotchas that might prevent this from working?

Thanks

You "may" get away with this type of cloning if you were going to
another Dimension 3000. Since you are going to a 4600, you will have
to reinstall XP. But Dell does not normally ship a "true" XP install
CD. Their XP recovery "system" will usually erase the hard drive so a
repair install can not be easily done.

Will it become invalid? It's invalid before you even start. The EULA allows
for installation on 1 PC at a time, if it's an OEM license there are further
restrictions. Even ignoring this, unless the motherboards are of similar
design it will blue screen and not even boot.
