client sees files on host but can't connect to the internet

I have 2 PCs on an XP home network. File sharing works and if I connect my
ADSL modem to either machine I can connect to the internet. I can not connect
to the internet from the client through the host computer (although it used
to work some time ago). I have tried re installing the home network, all
firewalls are switched off.
I can ping ok from the host but not the client. The error message from the
browser says 'unable to connect to the server'. I have both wired and
wireless network, both have the same problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Regards
Bernie

Do you have a router or ICS? If you don't know the differences, see this:

Hi Bob

Thanks for the reply.

I have a Linksys wireless router which is connected to my hub. My ADSL modem
is connected directly to my host PC via the USB port . My client PC is a
laptop that I sometime connect to the hub with a cable or sometime use the
wireless.

Hope this clarifies things

Assuming that your DSL modem has a RJ45 (Ethernet) port as well as a USB port,
and that your wireless router is the normal SOHO variety with 4 wired ports plus
wireless, then I suggest a simpler and more reliable way to configure your stuff
is to connect the DSL modem to the WAN port of your router, then connect the
main PC to a LAN port on the router and connect the other PC to either another
LAN port on the router or to its wireless link; then turn off ICS on the main PC
and use the hub as a paperweight.

With the simpler configuration, each PC can access the internet independent of
the other, and each can share files without involving the internet.
