clearing history in IE

I want to clear the history so that when I type a character in the URL bar, it stops offering me old addresses I no longer want. I have tried telling it to clear history, using tools, internet options, general, but it has no effect - the old addresses keep appearing. What do I do?

Those are not history URLs but are simply COOKIES and web pages
In your ISP's settings may have it set to store web pages. Uncheck it
To delete them, open IE/tools/internet options/delete cookies
and on and offline temporary internet files.

Thanks for suggestion, but it hasn't worked. Strange thing is that in XP Help it actually tells you what to do - and that doesn't work either!

Close all Internet Explorer windows.

START > Run... > Regedit

Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

Each item in the drop-down history list is stored in a value named url#
or url## where # is a number. Delete the values you no longer want.

If using regedit makes you nervous, search google for

"Internet Explorer" address bar history
selective OR selectively delete free download

Thanks Bob. I don't have a problem navigating to TypedURL's, but there is only one file in it, called (default) and it says there are no values. There are no others with numbers, as you suggested. Meanwhile the addresses keep autofilling. Am I missing something

There are several "TypedURLs" keys in the registry.
Let's assume you some how ended up in the wrong one and try again.

Run Regedit
Be sure there is a check mark next to "Status Bar" on the "View" menu.
On the left hand side scroll all the way to the top.
Select the My Computer icon.
(The status bar should say My Computer.)
Edit > Find...
Find what: TypedURLs
Look at
x Keys
Values
Data
Click the "Find Next" button.

When the search is complete, what do you see in the status bar?
If you don't see
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs
press F3 and search again.

Did you find the entries you're looking for?

IE/Tools/Internet Options/Content/AutoComplete/Clear AutoComplete history
then uncheck it to prevent it from re-building. Also clear your Recent
Documents history.

Hi bumble.
The history is stored in several index.dat files, one for each
day/week/month, they are deleted by IE each week/month.
But there is another index.dat under \history\history.IE5

From here : http://www.purgeie.com

This one is used to store 'Visited' URL names, date and time stamps.
This is the data used by I.E. for its AutoComplete function and
controlling the highlighting of embedded links on the displayed
Web pages.

For whatever reason, the "clear history" option doesn't clear all
addresses in the index.dat file.
You have many solutions : try to purge the history with PurgeIE, the
shareware on the site I've mentionned.
This trial version of "PurgeIE" may be installed and then evaluated
for up to 15 non-contiguous days.
Or you manually delete the index.dat file, you will find here how
to do : http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Pierre.
