Clearing Deleted Items folder

Windows Mail does not deleted items from the Deleted Items folder, I have to
open the folder and delete each of them individually. Furthermore, I have
artifacts of several deleted messages in the Deleted Items folder, the
message can't be displayed but the information is still shown in the list
view. How do I get rid of them?

Thanks Gary this seems to have me back in service. I choose to reset Windows
Mail rather than change to MS Live Mail. It appeared that Live Mail would
incur a cost to me for the service so I elected not to install it.

You have two options.
a. Go through the somewhat laborious "Reset Windows Mail" process:

or
b. Upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

There is no cost for Windows Live Mail. It is not a service,
it is an email program like Windows Mail.
