CLEAN INSTALL, SP1 AND 2, FOLLOWED BY PROTECTION

Good Morning,
This has proven to be challenging because I was bombarded so heavily by
popups and phantom downloads so much, I redid the clean install at least 3
times yesterday!

I think I know that SP1 and SP2 are essential, and upon encountering the SP1
download yesterday, I saw that it's been changed to SP1a. In any case,
downloading SP1a and then SP2 were good at about an 8.5 clip on a scale of
1-10, 10 being best, because both downloads hung toward the end. And then the
bombarment began so intensely that I eventually gave up for the night and
went to bed!

This morning I'm OK so far with my net connection (cable modem) and have
already downloaded and run Stinger (marginal, I suppose) and M$'s malicious
software removal tool (after Spybot S&D). And I have plans to downld & instl
Ad-Aware as well.

The trick is "gaining strength" with the additions of SP1a and SP2 BEFORE
another invasion cripples my sys...IOW, a lot of virus checkers need at least
SP1(a) before they will work properly.

Any suggestions? Any reliable sites to download SP1a and SP2?

THANKS!

First of all, you do NOT need to download and install SP1 and SP2. You
just need to download SP2.
Secondly, if you are on cable, download the admin version of SP2.
Then DISCONNECT your cable connection.
Then do a clean install, and install SP2.
Then, BEFORE you connect back to the internet, ENABLE THE FIREWALL. (In
fact in SP2 it's on by default but just check). You will get very little,
if NO "invasions" if your firewall is enabled BEFORE you connect your
cable connection.
You also do NOT get viruses unless you open emails from senders you don't
know, or click on attachments that you haven't asked for.
Stick to those rules, and you will find you will get very few infections
(if none at all) and very little spyware or malware.

I followed your instructions and found that the Messenger service was already
disabled!

Did you disable the Messenger service ? Go to Start, Run, type in

services.msc

Scroll down to Messenger. Double click it. Click the Stop button.
In the Startup type window set it to Disabled. Click Apply, OK.
Close the services console.

Order the XP SP2 CD and forget about SP1 :

The reason I question whether it will work is because when trying the Windows
Update page, I'm told that my computer is not "ready" for SP2
download/install, so I follow the instructions and attempt the "express
download (recommended)," and it bombs on the download of the first thing
(something about PITS)! This happened twice, so something is not jiving, for
want of a better word

I'll post what happens here; otherwise, I guess it's wait for the mailman
