Classic start menu and adjust for best performance

Hi!

Is there any way to use a gp to set all workstations in
our domain to "classic start menu" and display setting
to "adjust for best performance", because we have to
chance this on each workstation for each user and this is
very
annoying and i am looking for a way to change this
generally.

Maybe there is also a other way without gp.

Hi Christian,

First, we should upgrade the Windows 2000 group policy from the Windows XP
Client.

Then, in the User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and
Taskbar of the Group Policy Editor

Force Classic start menu

This can set to the classic start menu.

For the "adjust for best performance", you can apply the following registry
file to the client.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Visual
Effects]
"VisualFXSetting"=dword:00000002

I just tired changing this value on two WinXP machine and after rebooting
them both all the effects remain active. They never go away unless I change
this via My Computer and click APPLY. Is there something else to change
this by hand?

Hi Justin,

When you set the VisualFXSetting to 2, you should click the apply or
restart the computer. Then the effect will be taken.

I dont think you understood my message. When I change that value to a 2 via
regedit there is NO apply button AND resetting that machine doesn't do
anything. The changes do not take affect. Even though all the visual
effect boxes are uncheck the actual effects still remain.

Please advise...

Hi Justin,

Sorry about this. I notice that the system save the changes to the registry
and also save something to the hard disk or run a command to make the
changes affect.

So, we can't deploy this in the group policy.
