Clash in Recycle bin between Win 98 and Win XP

I have two operating systems, Win 98 and Win XP, installed on partitions C and D, respectively, of my hard disk. Every time I reboot from one system to another, the file names in the recycle bin of the previous system are hidden, as expected. The problem is that when I reboot back to that system, they still remain hidden and I cannot retrieve them any more (although the files themselves do exist, according to the notification of the number of files to be permanently deleted when I try to empty the recycle bin). How can I resolve this problem?

Sorry, this is not the case. While installing XP, I explicitly ordered to preserve intact the FAT32 format on both partitions, as it had been under 98. Indeed, under each system, I can see in its Windows Explorer all the files and directories of both partitions. The problem is only that the recycle bins appear as empty (while they are not) on switching back and forth between XP and 98

In your situation, the problem is that under Win98 the files are FAT32 and XP is NTFS. You can convert from FAT32 to NTFS but not back to FAT32. Hope this answers some of it, for more info and help go to below website

Empty the Recycle Bin right away instead of leaving files in it?

For one, you can stop using the Recycle Bin to store files in.

Hi Arie,

Make sure that something is in the Recycle Bin (delete any file). With the
Recycle Bin closed, right click and choose: Empty Recycle Bin. When the
confirm box appears, click ok. Reboot. Now the Recycle Bin should work
correctly.

If the above didn't help:

Files not being listed in the Recycle Bin seem to be related to a corrupt
info2 file. To correct the issue (Fat32):

Go to Start/Run and type in CMD:

Type CD \RECYCLED, and then press ENTER.
Type ATTRIB -r -s -h info2, and then press ENTER.
Type DEL INFO2, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: This deletes the damaged INFO2 file. Windows will recreate this file
as needed, automatically.

You can often restore files even if it is not being listed in the Recycle
Bin by searching (Start/Search) for the files by name, once found rename
them. If the files still cannot be recovered, follow the steps above, then
reboot. They should now be listed.
