CISVC.exe

I am running Windows XP Home on a Dell 4550 (P4 2.53 Gig,
640 meg of ram). When I go into Windows Task Manager my
CPU usage is anywhere from 94-100% at all times, EVEN
WHEN I DISABLE VIRUS SCAN, FIREWALL ETC. I have checked
for viruses and found none and have "killed" all spyware
with Ad Aware and still get these insane readings. I then
went into Processes and using the "end process tree"
command began closing down processes one at a time. The
process that is causing the problem is CISVC.exe. When I
shut this process down the CPU usage is a normal 0-2%,
however as soon as I reboot CISVC comes back and my CPU
usage rockets up to the 94-100% range, even at idle. Can
anyone tell me what is going on and should I be concerned?

Hi,

This process is the Indexing Process (to allow you to do fast (er) file
searches).

If you do "Start/My Computer" and the right click on a disk drive e.g. C:,
then choose properties, you will see that there is an option "Allow Indexing
Service to index this drive for fast file searching".

If you use the "Start/Search" function often, or have a lot of files that
you want to search through quickly, then you might need this feature. You
can disable it disk by disk, or you can turn it off completely by
"Start/Run/Services.msc". Locate the indexing service and disable it from
starting on startup.

It is a low priority process so will only gobble spare cpu cycles (very much
like the System Idle Process) when there are any available, i.e. only when
you are not doing anything. The indexing service is obviously looking at
new files and catloging them, so will settle down once file
creation/modification slows.

Hi Ron, I've done a google search, and found some info. See:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/cisvc/. Also see:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20585121.html. Microsoft:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cf-talk/message/60296, Q-Article Q238451:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;238451. From there more can be found.

I don't have it running on my PC, an XP Home machine. It seems there's no necessity.
