choose what folder expands in Explorer

How can I stop the C: drive folder from expanding everytime I use Explorer?
I almost never need to have this drive expanded because everything I
save/use is on the network drive.

If possible, I would prefer that the U: drive (network drive) expand
instead. But that is less important than keeping the C: collapsed so that I
do nothave to scroll down everytime I open Explorer - it is rather annoying.

Why not try another file manager?

(a) In XYplorer you can choose whether the start-up folder expands or not.
(b) XYplorer always starts in the folder last open when the app was closed.
(c) XYplorer lets you create shortcuts by which you can start the app in the
*exact* state you want it in.

XYplorer is a shareware file manager: http://www.xyplorer.com/

First create a shortcut of explorer on your desktop
Then right click and select Properties, select the Shortcut tab
Enter one of the two options show below in the Target field, click Apply
then the OK button.
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n, U:\
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e, U:\

Pick the option you like best.

Doesn't work. Just spent 30+ minutes pissing around with explorer, my old
shortcuts, your suggestion, folder options, etc., etc..

Then just created another simple, standard shortcut without any frills,
switches or other parameters - and it comes up ok in collapsed mode, as I
like it. ( I normally use '/e' switch but not this time).

Deleted and went thru all again, round and round, to make sure and sure
enough,
just creating the standard short cut works every time now. But how long this
will
last, nobody knows. Never lasts for me.

Somebody sometime ago here explained about similar method and bringing up
a duplicate of the first collapsed window - or something like that - but I
forget now.
Think I got it filed somewhere.

Js, this was very helpful. I was sucessful at creating a new shortcut to open
Windows Explorer with the view I want.

Not to be greedy - but is there a way to set it to do the same thing when
you right-click on the Start button to get to Explorer?
The new icon works - but ideally I would prefer to reach explorer the
"regular" way.

Modify the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore\command

To the way you want.
