Chkdsk

I'm using CHKDSK from the recovery console. If it shows errors, are they
permanent? I have trouble with Windows after installing other software.
After a fresh install of Windows, I then install my other favourite
software. When the desktop appears, there is a pause of about a minute and a
half before I hear the Start music and then the system tray fills and I can
use the computer. This happens randomly, i.e. it doesn't coincide with any
software installation, or setting changes. Each time I re-format and
re-install, I eventually get the same thing, but, as I say, qute randomly.
Could there be a problem with my hard-drive? ChkDsk does report errors with
the Volume Bitmap. (Whatever that is?!)

With best regards, Lindsay. E-mail: (e-mail address removed)

Do not post an unmunged email address in Usenet or on messageboards.
That account will now get a lot of spam and virus-laden emails. It
certainly sounds like your hard drive is failing. Download a diagnostic
utility from the drive mftr.'s website and make a bootable floppy with
it. Boot with the floppy you made and do a full diagnostic. If any
errors are returned, replace the drive, clean install Windows, drivers,
programs, and restore data from backups.
