Chkdsk Won't Run

J

John

I have a new computer (Acer "laptop" with a Maxtor 120GB drive)
and I cannot run chkdsk on the C: drive. I use a command prompt
with "chkdsk C: /r" or right-click on the C: drive in Windows
Explorer (in XP Home) and try to run chkdsk through Properties.
Each time it tells me, as it should, that it will run chkdsk
during the next boot. However in the next boot I get the message
"CANNOT OPEN THE VOLUME FOR DIRECT ACCESS."

Because I can't run chkdsk, Partition Magic 8.0 will not work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

Try opening cmd prompt,type:CHKDSK /REVERT
You can also boot to xp cd,recovery, press enter key for password,
then at cmd screen type:CHKDSK C: /R Or /p /F wont work in recovery.

Are you using ZoneAlarm ver 5.0 or higher. It is a known problem!

Got Zone Alarm v 5, right?
Read the support info on their site.

Pavel and Richard,

You are both right on the money. Uninstalling Zone Alarm cures
the problem. Now I'm using the semi-protective Windows firewall
(Sygate Pro gives me other problems.).

Partition Magic was either not working because the disk hadn't
been repaired by chkdsk, or maybe it also doesn't like ZA.

As you said, there is forum customer complaint about this,
starting 6 weeks ago on the ZA web site, but I didn't see any
response from ZA.

I am cured of the notion that chkdsk runs before Windows loads.

You should see my monster 1712 Acer laptop. Only one I know of
that has a 4:3 17" screen (and all the usual specs of a
desktop). And relatively cheap too ($1500-$1900). Two small
problems are 18 lb weight (including a 2 lb "brick") and 1 hr
battery life.:)

Thanks,
John

Chk Dsk won't run on new Acer Laptop

The solution is: Do not perform a clean system install from the recovery media included within the Acer laptop. When I bought my Acer I purchased 3 external system discs, one bootable. I finally discovered (after fidding around myself and with totally incompitent acer techs for weeks) that I had to perform a reinstall of the operation system from those 3 seperately purchased CD's. Once I did that, I had my tried and true chk dsk back. Hurray. Apparently there is a corrept file in the built in recovery system. I even send my Acer back to repair depot in TX and they didn't have a clue.

New Cure for Chkdsk Won't Run

Well, that cure I posted worked for awhile and now chkdsk won't run again. New cure I read about somewhere and it works! Click on Start, All Progams, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt, click on run as admin, type in command box, chkdsk /f and you can run it at next startup.
