CHKDSK won't complete checking - freezes during boot

N

-Nisko-

While booting my system, I get a message that says: One of your disks needs
to be checked for consistency - C: So I allow it to be checked and it
freezes at around 37% of the second phase of checking. In order to boot to
WinXP, I had to skip the CHKDSK against the advice of the message but that
was the only way I could send this post. Does anyone know how to fix this
problem? I tried Error Checking from within Windows - but the message says
that it will check next time I boot to Windows. I'm going to try this - but
I suspect it will continue to stall at about 37%. Thanks.........

After backup you can run chkdsk from the RC.

chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows XP
CD-Rom. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows
XP installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Also download and run the disk manufacturer's diagnostic utilities.

Hi and thanks. I had the recovery console installed in my boot menu
(followed MS's instructions). It worked (I think) but wouldn't accept a
username or password. The only thing I ever used was chkdsk /r. Recently,
I installed a boot manager to see how it worked. For some reason, even
though the MRC was still in my menu, it wouldn't load (just got a blinking
cursor). So I uninstalled the boot manager - but got the same result with
my MRC. I would like to install the RC as a menu item on boot - but can't
seem to get it to work now. Yesterday, I followed MS's instructions for
loading it on my machine. Still no luck. Can you help me load it so I have
complete access to the RC and all files?
I am assuming the username and password is the same as when I logon to the
PC.

Since you have a boot manager and or remnants of it it might be best to boot
from your installation media to run the RC. The password is for the local
administrator account.

The computer won't start with my Windows CD - and I first set the BIOS to
read the CD first. What do I do now? Thanks.........

Also look for the keystroke (if necessary) at POST to force boot from CD-Rom
drive or check your mobo/pc manual for instructions.

I'm using a Dell Latitude notebook. There's nothing in the BIOS to force a
boot from the CD-Rom. Can I use a floppy to boot from - then put the CD-Rom
in? If so, how do I make the floppy so it has the right drivers?

Most dells, after setting the boot order in cmos setup, will echo to the
screen at POST something to the effect "press any key to boot from CD-Rom"

| Not *this* Dell. Isn't there another way to get to the MRC on the CD?

Thanks again. I looked (briefly) at all three URLs - nothing popped up. I
remember when I loaded WinXP Pro - that I had to use a set of disks before I
could use the CD. Does that help?

D

Dave Patrick

Sorry, but it doesn't. This is really a hardware issue so you may need to
contact Dell.
