CHKDSK Problem

Ok..whenever I boot my PC, it runs the CHKDSK, it goes through stage 1 fine..as soon as it gets to stage 2, it just sits at 0 percent forever..sits..and sits..and sits..I've let it on over night, and I still come back to find it's at 0 percent..So I just exit it before it starts..So I tried running it on read only mode on a dos, and it goes through stage 1, but as soon as stage 1 finishes at 100 percent, the dos closes.. What should I do?
