ChkDsk hangs and Crashes

Steve

Hi All,

I have a problem concerning ChkDsk in XP. I have a pc with
2 physical drives, partitioned into 5 logical drives.
Every time I run Chkdsk on the first physical drive (C:\
and D:\, C:\ contains the system) it freezes. I can run
Chkdsk on every other drive without it hanging. Chkdsk
will start on c:\ but always hangs at 40%. Can anyone
explain what the problem with Chkdsk is or is it the drive.

Cheers
Steve

See if C and D are flagged as having a problem

run command

fsutil dirty query c:
fsutil dirty query d:

If either is marked dirty there is a problem that xp identified, however
chkdsk should then run automatically, when you reboot the system unless you
have disabled it.

Are you running it from a command prompt or from in disk properties/tools.
If its hanging in windows, try it from a command prompt. But C: can only be
run read only

If it still hangs have a look in taskmanger to see if its still using cpu,
if its using a lot, then its probably looping.
Are you telling it to fix errors or just running it in read only mode on D:?

You could try booting the recovery console from the release cd and running
it from there incase any files it needs are corrupted.
