chkdsk freezes step 2 &index.dat & blue screen

I'm at my wits end. I've tried several things but it kind
of keeps looping back to what's wrong.
First of all I'm running windows xp pro. I'm at less than
30% harddrive space(graphic programs and projects have
recently upsurped space). I thought I'd add that in case
that might be hurting it some. Anyways A few days ago, I
started getting blue screen of death :
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area, win32k.sys, ftdisk.sys,
unknown hard disk error coooo21a. Those mostly.
I ended up cleaning off my ram and placing it in a new
slot. For about a 1 or so it worked fine. Then started
blue screens again. The blue screens came at any time
during pc use and might show up at boot or shutdown. They
start few and rapidly start making it impossible to log
in. I shut down for a while and sometimes it settles down
with a few blue screen errors. I also tried opening my
case and putting a fan to it, it didn't work. I tried
chkdsk and it freezes at step 2 (out of 3). It stops at 0%-
2% and will sometimes blue screen after a little while. I
also found out that I have content.IE5 index.dat file that
is corrupted. I couldn't erase it through admin or cmd
w/explorer shut off or replace it with admin index.dat
(noncorrupted). It just keeps saying chkdsk and it is
corrupted. I also tried sfc /scannow. It ran through but
didn't do anything at finish(i'm not sure if it was
supposed to, otherwise it finished without a hitch), but
it didn't really seem to do anything, because I still
can't do chkdsk or erase that dat file.

If anyone has any ideas about what is happening or what I
can do . I would be most appreciative. I've searched
exhaustively on the index.dat and tried a lot of ways to
get rid of it. I even tried repairing the file with file
repair utility and it says 100% failed.

Thank you!

Btw.
I did try recovery and it errored out to blue screen. and
I check the log of the scannow thing and it did fix
files . I did the scannow about 3 times or so and it had
these similar files in common:
Windows File Protection scan found that the system file
c:\windows\system32\msdxm.ocx has a bad signature. This
file was restored to the original version to maintain
system stability. The file version of the system file is
6.4.9.1128.
Windows File Protection scan found that the system file
c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll has a bad signature. This
file was restored to the original version to maintain
system stability. The file version of the system file is
6.0.2715.400.
Windows File Protection scan found that the system file
c:\windows\system32\wmpcore.dll has a bad signature. This
file was restored to the original version to maintain
system stability. The file version of the system file is
8.0.0.4491.
The last one I did seemed clean by the logs.
thanks!

Thank you for sending me that page, but the error code
didn't match what I saw. Because I don't have 'goback' and
there were no other errors with the coooo21a, all it said
was 'unknown harddisk error', not fatal system error or
anything. (these were the things it refered to and to fix,
like erasing a program called 'goback'.
Anywmore ideas? It all seems to hinge on that index.dat
that system restore won't work ,etc.
do you think it might be section on the harddrive that has
failed?
thanks again.
