CHKDSK forever verifying usn Journal?

I ran into an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DISK. I ran chkdsk /r as well as WINXP (PRO)
CD repair. No success. I did fixboot. Booted fine, but now taking several
hours to "CHKDSK is verifying usn Journal..." This disk is 250GB. The disk
drive blinks now and then indicating access. How long should I expect it to
take before deciding that something went wrong. What should I do if
something did go wrong?
Thanks,
Kurt

Youre saying xp keeps running CHKDSK before xp opens, making xp unable
to start...If so,tap F8 key at start-up,select,safe mode,or try start xp
normal,
safe mode enter as administrator, then go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:
CHKntfs /X C: Then type:EXIT Restart computer.XP should only need 1
min.or less to verify,if running for hours, its in an open loop, end the task.

No success. Now I got UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DISK. Checked the drive with
manufacturer utilities (no problems detected), then with CHKDSK (which now
completes reporting no errors), did CHKDSK /R, did repair from CD, did
CHKDSK/R followed by FIXBOOT, followed by reboot. Nothing. Still
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DISK. Or blank screen (sometimes).

More suggestions?
