Chkdsk and Indexing

J

Jack Gillis

Win XP Home SP3.

For the past several weeks Chkdsk has run on my System Drive (C:) each time
I turn the computer on. I generally turn in on just once a day and leave it
on.

A recent chkdsk log is at the end of this post. The 'cleaning up' entries in
each log for each day vary only in the number of unused entries. Sometimes
it is just 2 and others many more.

I unchecked the 'allow indexing' on the system drive and so far no further
appearances of chkdsk appears when booting from power on.

Can someone explain what is going on here and help me have indexing on the
system drive an a chkdsk free boot?

Thank you very much.

Different indexing.

Backup your stuff to be safe. Check your hard disk drive with the hard disk
drive manufacturer's diagnostics utilities.

It's probably just an NTFS issue - but why it would be starting up recently
and consistently - that is the part that has me concerned.

Thank you, Shenan.

I have checked the disk with the manufacturer's utility and it shows no
problems. Also, I have repeated the procedure of disabling the indexing on
the drive and enabling it several times just to be sure about not using
XP's indexing. Same results each time -- no indexing works fine, indexing
does not. I just noticed that the same exact situation exists on my other
partitions ( 2 on the slave and 3 on the master as well as my 'My Book' usb
drive). Whenever I run chkdsk on those, I get the 'cleaning up unused
indexes......' message with indexing enabled and don't get it with indexing
disabled. Go figure!

Thanks again.
