Child domains

Hi,

I am getting a little confused with the DNS and what
actually is going on...
I have one domain for my enterprise that is 60 office
locations all connected with T1's to a head office (hub
and spoke topology). So I created one domain called :
abc.com
If my servers name is test...then its FQDN is
test.abc.com is this considered a child domain?What is a
child domain??
What would be the best placement of the FSMO roles if I
have one domain, 60 branch offices and each branch office
will have 1 domain controller, global catalogue and DNS
all on 1 server? Any help or guidance will be greatly
appreciated.
Thanking You

A child domain is a stem off the parent domain. For example the root domain
is abc.com. A workstation in the domain has FQDN of computer.abc.com. A
child domain is xyz.abc.com. A workstation is the child domain had a FQDN
of computer.xyz.abc.com.

If you have one domain then you have your 5 FSMO roles. I would place all
roles on DC's at the main location. Take a look at this KB article:

FSMO Placement and Optimization on Windows 2000 Domain Controllers
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=223346

You will need the DC at each location to have DNS and GC.

No, no, no.

It looks confusing, bu test.abc.com is still just describing a server. The
server name is test, the domain is abc.com.

I, on the other hand, could run DCPROMO on a new machine, and create a new
domain called test as a subdomain of abc.com. That domain name would also
be test.abc.com. In my namespace, test.abc.com refers to a domain, but in
your namespace, test.abc.com would refer to a server name.

As for FSMO placement, with only one domain, you don't have a lot of
options. There can be only one of each of the FSMO roles, with two being
forest-wide and three being domain-wide. Since you only have one domain,
that means that all five of the roles will be in that domain. It doesn't
really matter which DC you put them on, other that I would put them on a
'dedicated' DC that is not servicing logon requests.

HTH.

Hi,

Thanks for your help. it is much appreciated. So to
clarify...I will simply be using abc.com and I will have
no child domains? What is the purpose of having a child
domain?
Thanking You
