Check for new signature definitions fails with 0x80070003

Ever since upgrading to Defender Beta 2 I've been unable to get signature
updates. Even removing and reinstalling the whole product fails to alleviate
the problem. I always get " Windows Defender was unable to complete the
update: 0x80070003. The system cannot find the path specified." So I'm stuck
with old 25th January 2006 definitions.
How do I resolve this?

Is this a home machine, or a machine on a managed corporate network?

Windows Defender updates either manually, outside the program, via
Microsoft's Windows Update servers, or, within the program, via AutoUpdate.

If AutoUpdate is functioning, Windows Update should be capable of updating.

However, in a managed network, AutoUpdate may be connected via policy to a
local corporate server, SUS, WSUS, SMS, or a third-party solution. Windows
Defender definitions may be distributed via WSUS, and I believe via SMS, if
the network administrator enables this. Definitions are not available via
SUS, nor any third-party distribution server that I am aware of.

Its my home PC. I was trying to run the signature update from within
Defender (there's a button to click on). Actually, though, you mention
Windows Update, and that has failed to work for at least a year now, and
re-running it I see it gives a similar 0x80078003 return code. The problems
could be linked I guess. Any ideas?

Thank you for the advice. I have installed and run it with all boxes
checked. However the problem persists (and Windows Update still fails too).

Good call--I'd go with the second article first. As I recall it, that first
article is "exhaustive"--which is likely to have a similarly described
effect on someone trying to follow it.

Many thanks to JRosenfeld and Bill Sanderson. Following instructions in the
second article has completely solved my two problems.
