Help don't know what i'm doing. Trying to run Defrag but get a message that
chk dsk is scheduled to run. Have looked at previous posts and followed
kellys corner instructions to stop the scheduled task. I still get the
message saying it is scheduled to run. Tried running it but get a message
saying cant lock the drive. How do i lock the drive so i can complete check
disc and run the defrag. ive been trying to solve this for approx 3 months
now with friends advising me but nothing has worked.

I had exactly the same problem as this.

The problem was that Norton was stopping the chkdsk from running on
boot up. What i did was go into the 'Anti-virus' options section in
Norton and then into 'Auto-protect' then into 'advanced' then i
unchecked the box at the bottom marked 'Load auto-protect during system
boot' and hey presto! i re-booted my machine and the CHKDSK worked first
time and then i was able to use the defrag tool again.

If you have Norton too then try this.

Good luck

when you get that message, does it also ask you if you want to schedule
chkdsk to run when you restart your pc?

I don't know what you have tried, specifically since you only say you tried
the fix from Kelly's Korner, but you don't say what that is, so,

Did you check you schedules tasks?

Next try unplugging your printer, then restart your pc. If that does not
solve it, then
Post back if those don't work.

After XP says it can't lock the drive, do you get a prompt asking if it
should run chkdsk on the next restart? If that prompt appears, say yes,
restart the computer and let chkdsk run. When it's finished and you can log
on to Windows again, then run the disk defragmenter.

Hi thanks but unplugging the printer didnt work. I have checked the schedule
tasks but its not in there even though it keeps telling me it is. Yes it
always asks if i want to schedule chkdsk on start up but i alays click no. I
am also having problems with task manager so dont know if the problems are
related. After start up task manager is on but after a minute or two its of
again with a message saying disabled by administrator. I have never disabled
it.

If you: rt. click drive>properties>tools>error checking - two options are
presented 1. "Automatically fix...." and 2. "Scan for...." Leave both
unchecked and CHKDSK will run within Windows- but not repair errors it may
find.

Checking the options results in the dialogue that CHDSK will run at the next
boot - drive must be "locked" (nothing running) - you are given the option
(10 seconds I believe) to cancel CHKDSK.
