Chart Objects Behaving Badly

C

Chris \( Val \)

Hi all.

I have posted to various groups that I think are applicable,
but please tell me if any of these are not.

Here is my question:

I have an Excel workbook with 6 sheets. Three of the sheets
contain pivot tables, and the other three sheets contain
bar and pie charts based on the pivot tables.

Now in a Word document, I am inserting an OLE chart object ?
from the menu in Word, then I check the link checkbox, so that
when the spreadsheet is updated, the objects in the Word doc
(in this case bar and pie charts), are also updated.

When I insert the right charts into each page of the word doc
- page1 bar chart, page2 pie chart, everything is fine, however,
when I save and exit out of the word doc, and re-open it, all
my charts in the word doc are the same one and only chart that
was active before I saved it, so I have three of the same chart
(say pie chart), on each page.

When this happens, then I have to right click on each chart
object in the word doc, and then select edit which opens up
the Excel spreadsheet with the chart, select the chart I want,
save Excel and exit.

Then, while the word doc is still open, I right click and select
the update option, and the right chart appears for that word page.

I want the right chart(s) to display when I open the word doc,
instead of them all being the same one.

Why don't the right charts show up in word ?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks again.
Chris Val

Chris -

What if you copy each chart in Excel, switch to Word, and use Paste
Special - Paste Link (as Excel chart). This is much easier than
inserting an Excel Chart object, and the links seem to remember not only
the file, but also the sheet, it's linked to. The OLE links seem to want
to link to the active sheet.

Hi Jon.

Thanks for the excellent advice, it does work
when I do it as you suggested.

Do you know why it remembers the correct links
when done this way, as opposed to the other way
as I was originally doing it ?.

Thanks again.

Chris -

I really don't know why it works that way. I think when you create an
object, you browse to the file, then set it up to show the sheet you
want. But I think the link only remembers the file, so if you
subsequently open the file and look at another sheet, when you refresh
the link, that is the new active sheet, and that's what all the links
look at. I think we have to remember that OLE is an old technology, and
probably didn't get the upgraded features that some newer sexier
technologies have received.
