Character spacing too loose

G

Guest

i started using PowerPoint 2007 and noticed that no matter what kind of font
i use, the spacing between the characters in text boxes are much too wide.
this happens for any kind of text box. i tried opening the templates that
came with it, and the problem still occurred. what could be causing this? and
what can i do to fix it? thanks.

You could compress the text in the placeholders on the master. Do the same
for a "manual" textbox, then right-click and choose Save Defaults.

To change the compression setting, go to the Home tab, and in the Font
group, click the little square in the lower right-hand corner to open the
Font dialog box. (That little square is known as a "dialog launcher.") Hit
the Character Spacing tab.

Or you can do this manually on each textbox and placeholder. There's a
character spacing dropdown in the Font group on the Home tab that you can
use to get very tight, tight, etc. Or click "more spacing" at the bottom of
that dropdown to open the Font dialog box.

You could also try turning off kerning and see if the text looks better to
you then.

In addition to what Echo said:

- Make sure a local standard printer (or printer driver) is installed.
- Make sure that the new Office 2007 fonts are installed: Calibri, Corbel,
Consolas, Candara, Constantia, etc.

Best regards,
Ute

all the fonts you listed are installed in my system.
and i do have an installed printer.
it's just weird this character-spacing problem only happens in PowerPoint.
but thanks for the help.

Thanks for the screenshot. I think Ute is right about needing a printer
driver -- you need to have a Windows Certified driver installed and set as
the default printer.

I'd start by checking to see if Windows has a driver for your printer. You
know those are "windows certified."

I am having this same problem in Word with text that is inside a text box.
The uneven spacing is not as exaggerated as the screenshot above. I have text
(Cambria font) in a text box that is in the header of a page; I copied the
exact same text and pasted it in the body of the page: I printed the page
with both text blocks and the header text spacing is uneven, the body text is
just fine. So in my case, this has nothing to do with the printer driver.
I've seen this before is older versions of Word, and I am surprised there
hasn't been a bigger issue made of this problem.

i've got exactly the same problem. worse, all my powerpoint files that i have
created and dowloaded are affected. i wonder how come the character spacing
has been changed? there must be a command to restore the original spacing.
anyone could help us please?

Thank you for the assistance, Echo. You're advice has been useful. What
caused the problem was the change of printer default. I couldn't figure out
how come the printer affects all of my powerpoint files and chaged the
character spacing. Anyhow, I am so happy that the problem has been solved.

Glad to hear it's working again for you. That printer default thing is
really maddening. I think PPT should detect if there's an appropriate
printer driver or not, and if not, it should emulate one or provide one or
something. It's frustruating, because why would you (a user in general)
associate a printer driver with your presentation display? I know I sure
wouldn't!
